CQ, CQ, CQ, This is W1INK by Derek Fostel
Wink High School students again competed in the annual School Club Roundup, for the third consecutive year. With new technologies donated to Wink High School from the ARRL School Equipment Grant, new students and returning students were able to use digital messaging for the first time. The grant from ARRL also provided the school with a Kenwood radio, power supply, and the new antenna that sits on the home stands of Wink’s football field.
Teacher and Sponsor, Cary D. Hannsz, noted that with new generations there are new technologies. Mr. Hannsz said, “HAM radio brings in a form of new technology and puts it in the hands of the students.”
Students this year seemed to enjoy using the radio because of the success of the Roundup. W1INK, the school’s call sign, made eighty-five total contacts from twenty-six different states and two international contacts, from Puerto Rico and Ireland. Mr. Hannsz was impressed with the work ethic of the students and how “they were always working.” The use of both the voice communication and digital communication made it easier for the students to talk and type to others on the radio.
Cary D. Hannsz, and the rest of the Wink student body, sends a special thank you to Grady Smith from Pecos, call sign WA5ZBX, and Kermit’s Royce Senn, call sign WA5KMH, for all of their time and the contributions they made to the annual School Club Roundup.
