Wink-Loving ISD to Implement Dave Ramsey’s Foundations of Personal Finance Curriculum

This spring, Wink Junior High/High School will proudly introduce Dave Ramsey’s “Foundations of Personal Finance” curriculum at the junior high and high school level. Students in grade 8th will proceed through the middle school edition of the curriculum while the 12th grade students will work through the high school edition of Foundations of Personal Finance.

Wink Junior High / High School Principal, Scotty Carman, comments, “We feel it is our responsibility to teach more real-life skills to our students. With so much focus on testing and accountability, sometimes schools forget to teach the common sense, real-life information that all students need to be successful after high school.”

A new study by Ramsey Solutions, a leading company in financial education, finds that students who are taught personal finance lessons in the classroom have a better understanding and more confidence when it comes to managing their money.

Of high school students who have taken a personal finance course, 94 percent report understanding how student loans work and 79 percent report understanding how a 401(k) works. Students who have taken a personal finance course are also more than three times as likely to say they would rather have $500 in the bank instead of a smartphone.

Students who have taken a personal finance course are 23 percent less likely to say they plan to use student loans to pay for college. Instead of student loans, 69 percent of students plan to utilize scholarships, 53 percent plan to have help from their parents, and 51 percent plan to personally fund their college expenses.

Dr. Dewitt Smith, Wink-Loving ISD Superintendent, states, “Wink-Loving ISD is very excited to provide Dave Ramsey’s Foundations of Personal Finance to our students.   It’s really an awesome opportunity.  The courses will provide our students with a solid foundation for financial management as they transition from high school to adulthood.  The opportunity to be equipped with such a deep understanding of money management, monthly budgeting best practices, and long-range financial planning will give our students a great advantage, at a very early age, toward realizing life-long financial peace.”
